Understanding Biophilia & Salutogenesis
The science behind our designs
Biophilia — E.O. Wilson
Biologist E.O. Wilson in his 1984 book “Biophilia.” He stated that humans have an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other living organisms.
Salutogenesis — Aaron Antonovsky
Aaron Antonovsky in his 1979 book “Health, Stress, and Coping.” focuses on the factors that promote health and well-being. Antonovsky’s work emphasized the importance of sense of coherence, comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness in maintaining health.
Biophilic design — Stephen Kellert
The term “biophilic design” was coined by architect and urban planner, Stephen Kellert, in the 1990s. Kellert, along with others, developed the concept of biophilic design as a way to incorporate elements of nature into built environments to promote human well-being and connection to nature.
Dimensions of Biophilic Design
In 2008 Kellert publishes “Dimensions of Biophilic Design,” outlining principles and strategies.
These two scientific works form the bedrock of what today is known as Biophilic designs and salutogenic living in Real estate development and building of sustainable environment in modern town planning.
Biophilic design has since gain popularity, with increased research, publications, and projects showcasing its benefits.
